Karlshamn-Vislanda-Bolmens Railway - K.V.B.J.

The unique bridge was manufactured in Belgium during the second half of the 19th century and was built in 1873 in its current position. It was pivoting in order to allow the steamboat traffic to pass through, the traffic that was at times of cosiderable proportions on Lake Åsnen. Passing timber barges for further transport into Horgefjorden contributed to the bridge being in use until the middle of the nineteen fifties. "The bridge is without doubt the most interesting of the preserved historical monuments from early industialization in Västra Torsås. It is still in good condition, and with its beautiful dolphins of cut stone it is of great value to our native district".

("The Karlshamn-Vislanda-Bolmen Railway" in the Native District Annual of Västra Torsås (1996),p.252 by Bengt Quistgaard).

Gauge 1067 mm In the middle of the 19th century one began to build railways in Sweden. A connection between Karlshamn and Värend in the county of Kronoberg (the southern trunk line) had been discussed earlier. In 1874 the 78 km long line was inaugurated by Oscar II. The railway had the unusual gauge of "3,5 feet", i.e. 1067 mm. It was shut down on May 30, 1970.
